Rotate PDF

Rotate PDF pages in your browser and keep the change. Nothing is uploaded and there is no limit. Turn every page at once, or pick out just the sideways ones from the thumbnail grid.

or drop them here, or paste

As many as you like. They stay on your device.

Rotation in a PDF is a property of the page, not a change to the image on it. Each page carries a rotation value of 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees, and a viewer applies it when drawing. Rotating here changes that stored value, so the page opens correctly everywhere, in every reader, forever.

Everything happens inside this page. Your file is read by JavaScript running on your own machine, and no part of it is sent anywhere.

Why your viewer's rotate button does not stick

This is the single most common frustration with rotated PDFs. Most readers have a rotate button in the toolbar that turns the view without touching the file. Close the document and the rotation is gone, and anybody you send it to sees the original orientation.

That button is a view control. It exists so you can read a sideways page without editing a document you may not have permission to change. To make rotation permanent the file itself has to be rewritten, which is what this tool does.

Whole document or selected pages

Scanned documents often come out with a mix of orientations, because the pages went through the feeder in different directions. Rotating everything by 90 degrees fixes half of them and breaks the other half.

Use the thumbnail grid to rotate individual pages instead. Each thumbnail has its own control, and the preview updates as you go, so you can see the whole document is upright before you save it.

Which direction is which

90 degrees turns the page clockwise, so the top edge moves to the right. 270 turns it anticlockwise. 180 flips it end over end, which is what you need for pages that were fed in upside down rather than sideways.

Rotation is cumulative on the stored value. A page already at 90 that you rotate by 90 ends up at 180. The thumbnails show the result rather than the arithmetic, so you can just keep pressing until it looks right.

Landscape pages are not always mistakes

Before rotating a whole file, check whether the sideways pages are wide tables or diagrams that were meant to be landscape. Those pages are correctly oriented in the file and correctly printed. If they look wrong on screen it is because the reader is fitting a wide page to a tall window.

Rotating those pages will make them read correctly on a screen and incorrectly on paper. If the document is going to be printed, leave them.

Questions about Rotate PDF

Why does my PDF rotation not save?

The rotate button in most PDF readers only turns the view, not the file. To make it permanent the document has to be written again with the new rotation stored on each page, which is what this tool does.

Can I rotate only some pages of a PDF?

Yes. Every page has its own control in the thumbnail grid, so you can fix the six sideways pages in a fifty page scan and leave the rest alone.

Does rotating a PDF reduce quality?

No. Rotation changes a number stored on the page, it does not touch the text or re-encode the images. The file that comes out is the same quality as the one that went in.

Which way does 90 degrees turn the page?

Clockwise. The top edge of the page moves to the right side. Use 270 to turn it the other way, and 180 for pages that are upside down.
